To begin with, what was I thinking?
Then I read updates online on the movie doing well at the box office over the weekend, which makes me wonder what are people thinking! My heartfelt condolences and sympathies for all those who sat through this mentally grueling experience.
Didn’t we just hear about the film and know that it would be a painstaking test of our patience. “Half Girlfriend” is the story of Madhav Jha (Arjun Kapoor) a boy from remote Bihar and Riya Somani (Shraddha Kapoor) an elite class Delhi girl who meet in college, gel over basket ball, which is their common interest and fall almost in love.
Half Girlfriend was a confused adaptation of an even more disoriented book. I don’t know if the director Mohit Suri should be blamed or Chetan Bhagat the writer of the book. The male protagonist spoke so much of a language that was a weird marriage between Hindi and Bhojpuri that it was hard to even believe that it starred Arjun Kapoor and not Ravi Kishan. Arjun Kapoor tried his best but sometimes he over did it and other times, we won’t know because we were looking for a wall to bang our heads.
While Shraddha Kapoor was absolutely admirable in the way she effortlessly ruined every scene and dialogue, she pulled of the high-class Delhi girl quite well except she was classier and more subtle than the real ones.
The highlight of the movie was Bill Gates who made a guest appearance in the film without even knowing he was making one.
In a sequence where Arjun Kapoor’s character had to host an event for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the makers of the film went for the worst guy in the city for some absolutely disastrous CGI effects. I don’t know if this is worse or the fake Obama they used in My Name is Khan.
Movies like these make be doubt people and their understanding of everything in this world. How hard is it to know what you are making is “stupid”. So much effort to eventually make a fool of yourself.
But, the responsibility for such a calamity should be traced to its roots. Yes, it is Chetan Bhagat.
Chetan Bhagat doesn’t write books, he writes scripts that too really bad ones. His target audience is a filmmaker who wants to make a film but has no script. So, naturally he should go to the nearest roadside stall selling a pirated version of a Chetan Bhagat book and turn it into a film to experience only an even horrendous fate.
I am not giving out the story because by now you should be ashamed if you even care to know what happens in the movie or you should totally go watch it cause why should I suffer alone?
