Bollywood’s Sari (torial) picks at Cannes

The sari has been time and again referred to as an elegant attire, here in India. But, the drapes have worked their magic on the international grounds as well with our Bollywood divas sporting different sari looks several times they represented India at the Cannes Film Festival.

From Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s first sari look in 2002 to Sonam Kapoor’s experimentation with metallic yarn sari (must say, a futuristic pick by Sonam to take Indian designers like Rimzim Dadu on the global map ) that proved to be a huge hit at the Cannes 2016, saris have surely made a statement at the French Riviera.

Be it the simple and elegant look like that of Nimrat Kaur or Nandita Das, or the ruffled dress-cum- sari fusion look (apt for the summer!) donned by Kapoor – the experimentations with different sari materials like linen, metal wire or patterns like florals, monochromes, teaming it up with sheer blouses, or a bunch of accessories, have all seen a huge boost with the sari trend at Cannes.

Pearl and embroidered jackets too had a major role to play as they have upped the ante when worn with classy, patterned saris.

If you love the drapes, you would love how the six-yard beauty has turned more contemporary not only in the way you drape it, but also in the way you accessorize and play with the entire look.

This time it is the kamarbandh that is creating a rage as Kapoor and Shruti Hassan are seen wearing it, only more as belts. I feel the belted sari look works both as a formal and a party look.

As the 70th edition of Festival de Cannes is here, we can hope for the sari to create new benchmarks at Cannes, inspiring a lot more other Bollywood actresses stepping foot on the Red Carpet.

While Aishwarya will grace the carpet with her presence for the 16th time on May 19th and 20th, it’s Deepika’s second time at the Fest after 2010 as a brand ambassador for L’Oreal Paris. For the last 15 years and at different stages of her life and career, Aish has been an integral part of Cannes and has left an indelible mark each time with her style, enough to keep all of us anticipating her return at the popular film festival. For Sonam, this red carpet appearance will be marking her presence at a time when her fashion brand along with sister Rhea Kapoor is soon to launch.  The brand will be aptly named Rheson.

Now that Sonam is coming up with her own fashion brand, it would be even more exciting to know how she styles herself for the Cannes 2017.  Will the good old sari be back this time around?
